Anyway, Classiky ought to keep you entertained. It kept me entertained. Entertained enough to be late starting my day. Entertained enough to consider learning to read Japanese. Entertained enough to start opening more umbrellas in the house.

Gotta say I prefer this to the Sartorialist and that other sort of blogs where people insist on showing off what they've decided to don for the day. (I will never understand the 'what I'm wearing' phenomenon. But maybe that's because I'm over the hill...or...excessively cantankerous? or... as mentioned in my last post, a walking heap of rags.)
Anyhoo...I've had Fashematics in my bookmarks for a while now...and meant to post about it, but the xmas rush got the better of me. It's fun, brilliant, and anyone that can work Dazzle Camouflage into the mix is always going to be a favorite. Loving the obscure references, the pop references, and of course, the couture.

So...I'm in desperate...desperate...need of a wardrobe and style overhaul. Despite writing almost daily about these matters, I actually have not bought myself any new clothing in over a year, and still wear things I owned in high school tho I'm creeping on 35. This is a fact.
These caught my eye...There's a notable take on shapes and forms in each of them. Once again, I'm loving the way that the materials combine to make a slightly deco asthetic that feels solid and substantial, yet new and fresh. It's definitely worth taking a closer look. To new things!

These vintage scarf buttons by Pamela Barsky (available at Greer Chicago) remind me that looking up from one's work can be a good thing that leads to even better things.
And, I hope you like the little collage I made up here... Each one of these pins reminds me of a little world. And I never think about little worlds without thinking of Little Princes.

So...I am obviously quite excited to see new work by the super-talented Chilean designer Karen Barbé.
There are some designers/crafters who just, in my opinion, "get it". And by "it" I mean, they get the whole thing. How to mix and pick materials, how to take photos, how to present their work, and how to combine things in a way that feels right.
This designer is one of those people. There's an element of composition in her work, and an attention to the qualities of the things and colors the works with that creates a really delicious result.

You know, I'm not sure if I've ever been so taken by a pair of swim trunks!
Anyway, I thought the shape of these up here was wonderful. They remind me of something an F Scott Fitzgerald character would wear. Specifically, Dick Diver in Tender is the Night. It's a good book. I highly recommend it.
The thing I love about Menswear (other than all the other things I've mentioned here over the years) is how no-nonsense it is. It's been the same for decades, sometimes centuries. And for me, there's just something so fundamentally hip about that. A nice bit o'menswear can really accent the more trendy aspects of a woman's style with a decidedly confident edge. Just think of pulling that army surplus lighter out of your fabulously girly purse...or flashing a hint of suspender underneath that fitted blazer. Love it! Tough, but sweet.
I also adore the business card case up here. Reminds me of being in detention and scratching stuff onto a school desk. Of course, this would be the grown-up version of that.

I read this really funny thing that Karl Lagerfeld said, once. I won't get it exactly but basically, he said, if one ever wants to look like an idiot in a major city, wear a huge floral print.
But, it's my duty here to inform of trends, and so inform I will. And while I'm decidely anti-floral, there's just something about that dress on the upper left (Stella McCartney) that almost...almost manages to make it pass.
Yes, they have their place, but personally, I think it's on a chaise lounge. Your thoughts?

First of all, a big, big, thank you to those of you who commented to give me a nice, enthusiastic welcome back to the blogosphere! I really appreciate it, and it's nice to know I was missed! I missed all of you, too.
Now. Onto the matter above. These items are from VPL and Orly Genger...part of their separate collections. But, I was really excited to see what happened in the VPL spring/summer collection, where a little collabo is taking place.
Both of these designers share a love of mixing the utilitarian with the ornamental...to very interesting structural ends. It's fascinating how their current cooperation creates a look that is at once soft and hard. So, if you have time today, I'd recommend that you visit the VPL site and take a look at the s/s collection...then the accessories pages. It's thought provoking.
And, If I can add one more thing, I like the way these designers reinterpret femininity. The references they work with are interesting and charged. I thought you might enjoy that, too. FYI There are also collaborations with Lizzie Fortunato and Tuttle.

Hi Everybody! Hoping you are all doing well. I'm back from Atlanta and very excited about starting 2010, both from a business and a personal standpoint. I can just feel possibility is in the air. It feels good!
I wanted to share a website that I just found through Twitter (factory20 if you are reading this, thank you for letting me know about you!). I grew up in a house filled with oddities...everything from a stuffed elk head left to us by some obscure relative to an old, enameled Ex-Lax sign hanging in the bathroom and a watchmakers table to hold our board games. So, seeing such a diverse collection of vintage items and furnishings was a treat. The photography on this site is excellent- and really gives a sense of the dignity and unique personality of these objects.
And of course...you can inquire to buy the items. I've picked out a few of my faves up here... but the rodeo scene is by far my favorite. I love the blur, and the impermanence of this shot...almost like it's happening in a dream. Which in a way, it was.
