I just finished reading Mayflower, by Nathaniel Philbrick; a book which tells a very different story of the Plymouth Colony than most Americans learned in school. Anyway- I'd highly recommend it for any non-fiction lovers with a thirst for history. (Did you know that Squanto had actually lived in Europe prior to meeting the Pilgrims?? Anyway, I just found that out.)
One of the things I thought was really interesting was the fact that Native Americans at the time were really interested in the tools and objects that the Europeans brought with them. I really enjoyed the passages where Philbrick described the would-be appearance of Massasoit, Weetamoo, and Awashonks...all Native American leaders in the now-Massachusetts State area-- 2 of them women.
I was really taken by the descriptions of their clothing-- not only the 'typical' Native American items-- but a mixture of the 2 cultures clashing against and absorbing into each other...Engraving...Suede...Buttons...Feathers...Stockings...Stone and Shell...
The images up above are things that have caught my eye here in NYC
