Ever read Faust?

I was inspired, in my own Faustian way, after having a Madeleine as a snack last week, to create this little feel-board. Simple things, they bring such joy!  So does lots of butter, apparently.

Dear Hunter,

While I know you have a company to run, and new boot designs to reveal, I wanted to let you know my opinion about one of your discontinued styles.

The (now unavailable) Lady N in BLACK was pretty much the perfect rain boot, and should be brought back and made a permanent item. And, it makes me sad when I think that the Lady N was killed off before her time had truly come. In fact, I'm dabbing tears away right now. The toe shape is more elegant than the usual Hunter boot. The equestrian-style cloth top adds a shade of elegance to this boot, and makes it easy to wear. And, the slim fit of the top is really so flattering.

No, no, don't tell me to try the Regent. I know it's new. But you see, it doesn't have the cloth top. And I'm not into shiny.

So, what does Lady N stand for? Maybe...Lady Neverneverland? Lady Not Available Right Now? Or does it stand for Lady, Now Is The Time!!!!

I'm just wondering. Anyway, This boot. In black. While I think it's cute to offer the linen, the army green, the blue....Just a simple request... just in black. That will do. That is all I ask.

My tastes have not changed. Now I'm posting about these... which caught my eye this morning. Along with many other things in this shop.

It's also worthwhile (or should I say Woolworthwhile) to read the info they've chosen to highlight about the 99 cent shirt. Nice touch!

DAILY CRAVE { making it better }

Good morning everyone...

When I came across this paper clip I had to pause. Some of you who read my blog, or know me personally, might know that I consider the paperclip to be one of the most beautiful pieces of design on earth. Simple, easy to use and re-use, small, elegant.

Given the over-complicated and daunting state of the world right now, this iteration of the paper clip seemed particularly relevant. Not only as a piece of product desgn...but as a little work of contemporary art. A reminder of what it's possible to do if we remember to stop and think.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW { spinthread, emma carroll }

I thought I'd end the week with a little installment of "Where Are They Now", which is my little series centering on new ideas coming forth from popular artists seen in the blogosphere.

I thought I'd center on Spinthread, whose interesting, embroidered necklaces burst onto the scene a few months back, and Emma Carroll, whose innovative and colorful uses for leather caught my eye a couple seasons ago.

Anyway, it's so great to see each of these talented designers moving into some new ideas, and going further with their distinct styles. In Emma Carroll's case, she's been debuting some new, bright, equestrian meets geometric pieces, which I am really liking, and while her prior pieces centered more on pieces of leather, these new items have more emphasis on the hardware...rivets, grommets, chain and metal. I'm also just loving her playful series of pouches! What a great accessory, and I like the concept that you can carry a bag that's actually three separate pockets. Quite Interesting!

In the case of Spinthread, she is moving into some new forms for her jewelry. Bracelets, Necklaces, and even These Incredibly Embroidered Epaulets (which are fantastic!). Not only are these new shapes larger, they also give her great embroidering style more room to show off. Personally, I'm really loving the yoke-style frontpiece combined with multiple chain, or textile necklaces.

One of the things I always think to myself when I see a new designer with a hot style, blowing up in the blogosphere, is... "That's cool. But can they keep it going?" Because that is the trick. And it is always inspiring to see designers who start off strong, moving into new places and showing us more of their talent. Personally, I hope these two designers keep surprising me!

DAILY CRAVE { leave it to weaver }

Hi Everyone!  I'm sorry to have been away from my blog more than I'd expected this week. I have been very, very busy working on some new business stuff. More on that later.

For now... I thought I'd post about these really neat little handwoven textile swatches. As I've said before, I never get tired of looking at bold abstract shapes. To me, the randomness of these patterns, taken from handmade rugs, fills my creative mind with possibilities and refreshes my eyes.

CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE { ronald searle }

Taking a break from the usual fare today with some illustrations I managed to find online - these are by one of my absolute favorite illustrators, Ronald Searle.

When I was about 10, my parents returned from one of their weekend antique-seeking jaunts. My Dad had brought a book back for me. He was quite excited about it. It's front cover was tattered, and it's back cover depicted a fantastic black and white vignette illustration of a battle between two schoolgirls.

I literally spent hours looking over the illustrations...and reveling in the drawings that celebrated misbehavior. There was something so great about the lead character Angela Menace and her deviant ways. Searle had drawn these caricatures of girls behaving badly with such love, humor, and admiration. It was eye-opening, and delicious.

As an awkward middle school kid,  to see such a rebellious version of girlhood was incredibly inspiring. And as an adult...well, it feels exactly the same!

RUNNING INTERFERENCE { new wave }

This weekend, over Egg-Salad Sandwiches, K and I were listening to a new wave compilation which he picked up at Book Off a few days ago. There are few things which can distract me from a perfectly made egg-salad on still-warm toast... but I found out "She Blinded Me With Science" is one of them.

Anyway, I thought this post was an appropriate expression of my rediscovered love for new wave. Recently, listening to it feels so right.

All it takes is black, white and a clear direction.
